Sound has been intimately intertwined with our daily practices, meditations, celebrations, rites of passage and sacred ceremonies throughout human history. Shamans, priests, priestesses, healers, masters, and medicine men and women from the four corners of the earth have worked with sound in sacred ways since ancient times and have created many sound instruments as tools to assist them in their work. (The Instruments section provides in-depth information about each of a sound healer’s tools.)
A sound therapy/healing practitioner works with these different instruments with devotion and dedication. As she does, her positive intentions are absorbed into the vibrations of sound created and the sound instruments, tools and tones become instruments of power. Intention, combined with harmonic resonance, creates sounds that are inherently therapeutic. Therapeutic sound is, therefore, created through the healer’s inner and outer altruistic intentions.
Therapeutic sound tools create natural waves of unadulterated sound that both feed and strengthen the being as a whole. The pure, clear sound waves emitted from therapeutic sound tools work through sympathetic resonance and go to where they are needed. Therapeutic sound can balance and harmonize us, it can act as an energetic body builder and cleanser and help us on our journey to spiritual unfolding and wholeness.
In more modern times, scientists theorize that everything contained in the universe is in a state of vibration, from the smallest molecular structure to the largest planetary system. The extent to which these sounds manifest resonance or dissonance depends on many factors, such as the quality, type and volume of the vibration emitted. The medium in which sound waves travel can also change the quality of the sound. For many thousands of years, ancient sages, masters and enlightened communities have known about and understood the significance and importance of sound as a sacred instrument of immense power and potential; not only for healing but also, for spiritual development. Sound has been interwoven into humanity’s psyche as a means of healing, understanding and transforming the body, mind, heart and spirit. Scientific and modern-day spiritual communities are only now catching up with this arcane wisdom.
